Ahoy!

Here begins our tale, of the adventures of TeamHudson. Many of you will have landed here from my other blog, ElementalMom. That blog is more for musings, tirades, discussions of motherhood and politics and discovery. This blog, however, is a completely different story. This is the tale of our family, making one of the biggest leaps a family can make.

A while back, Jason and I were startled to discover that despite all the various hopes, dreams, and aspirations of our youth, we’d somehow found ourselves being garden-variety desk-driving SUV-owning suburbanites.

And we were slightly ill.

Late one evening, after the boys were tucked in and the lights were low, we dared to start dreaming again. We told each other stories about what we wanted out of our life together. And in no time at all, we’d discovered that the shape of our collective dream was a ship. And that our children’s futures were the stars we had to sail her by. And that was enough to get started with.

Being a research geek, I started, well, researching. What I really wanted to find was a total cradle-to-grave how-to manual for what we wanted to do. And it just isn’t out there. Most of the books on ditching it all for the cruising life are of the general theme “just do it! And rollerfurling mainsails suck!”

Not really all that helpful. But it does tell me that there’s a place in the world for our story. So here we are, ready to tell it as it happens. Maybe I’ll massage it into a real print book sometime later. But we really don’t want our friends and family to have to wait that long to hear what we’re thinking.

So… welcome aboard. This is the beginning.

Couldn’t keep myself from being the first to leave traces in the fresh snow of this page…
If/When you make it onboard that dream boat someday, I hope you’ll always have good internet access – to stay in touch, and to research whatever it is you’ll need on life’s waves.

BTW, with 3+ online writing projects going on in parallel, do you think you’ll ever spend more than 50% of your life blogging about what’s happening in those remaining less than 50%? ;-)

This is so excitng! Too often we give up our dreams or aren’t open to new ones. It is so inspiring that you’re taking the leap…or is that plunge? I can’t wait to read more.

Huzzah! This is wonderful! Can’t wait to read how it comes along.

And looking forward to every word of it, especially how you deal with Internet access!

    Hey there!

It looks like we have homebirths AND dreams in common! My guy (also a Jason!) and I learned to sail up off the coast of Washington state, before our first was born. The five year plan to get away has slipped a bit, but we’re still dreaming. These days, we’re hard at work building an ecovillage – 9 households strong so far! We figure even liveaboards eventually need somewhere with dirt to come home to… ;)

Best of luck with your sailing – maybe our boats will cross paths someday!

How very cool… I love that suburanite realization and how you dealt with the realization by talking about how you dreamt of your life together…what sheer brilliance! Proves you’re not really so “garden variety” – otherwise, you may have simply drowned the pain with work or shopping and numbly gone on for 10 years or divorce court whichever came first. OK that was downer…what I meant to do was congratulate you for calling it, and then dreaming it differently. Love that!
